SecondPlayThrough Medals

We wanted a system that was at its core very basic, yet allows us the complexity we need to differentiate good, great and superb games from one another.  One thing we always loved as gamers was that feeling a game gives you through awards or accomplishments, so we thought, why not base our system of that same sort of principle.  We decided that the system that would best fit our site and our four-person reviews would be a “Medal system.”  This way we could all award our own personal medal to a game.  We then average all of them together to give an overall Medal.

Once we had conceived the basic idea of a medal system for SPT we wanted to add another layer of depth to the system... so we could further separate games by quality.  This is where our stars you see on the medals come into play. Once a game is given a medal it’s then awarded up to four stars which are then placed on the medal.  This helps distinguish just how good a game is down to a high level of detail (and makes every medal look significantly more epic!)  Through adding stars to a medal we can eliminate the decimal rating system but still keep the principles of separating the best of the best!  Every star Counts!

Bronze

Games we award the bronze medal can be many things, but at the end of the day they're still very flawed pieces of work.  These games are still worthy of some recognition.  They have managed to float to the top of most of the crap out there... but not by much.

Silver

Ah, silver medal games!  These games are quite "good," solid overall and much more worthy of your time!  Coming ever so close to greatness; sadly, there are still some nagging issues that drag these poor fellows down.

Gold

Now we're getting somewhere!  Gold medal games are truly great video game experiences! When we hand out one of these medals it's because they're worth it!  These are special games that hang just under the precipice of...

Platinum

These are the games that remind us why we game!  The highest caliber gaming experiences available in our opinion!  You truly do not want to miss a game awarded one of these medals!  Watch the stars on these ones... this is truly epic territory!
